WhatsApp Notifications Arriving Late: How to Fix It

Messages only appear when you open WhatsApp yourself, or alerts show up minutes or hours after they were sent.

Try these in order

  1. Check your internet connection Open a website — if it doesn't load, your connection is the problem, not WhatsApp (WhatsApp Help Center).
  2. Turn on notifications in your phone settings Go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications > WhatsApp and switch them on. Your phone's settings override WhatsApp's own (WhatsApp Help Center).
  3. Turn on notifications inside WhatsApp Tap Settings > Notifications and enable the alert types you want (WhatsApp Help Center).
  4. Toggle background data Go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Mobile data usage and turn Background data off, then on again (WhatsApp Help Center).
  5. Turn off Do Not Disturb Check Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb and switch it off (WhatsApp Help Center).
  6. Update WhatsApp Install the newest version from your app store (WhatsApp Help Center).
  7. Restart your phone and install system updates A reboot plus any pending software update fixes many delivery delays (WhatsApp Help Center).
Still stuck? Aggressive battery-saving features vary by handset, so contact your phone's manufacturer if notifications are still late after all of the above (WhatsApp Help Center).
