WhatsApp Backup or Restore Failing: How to Fix It
Your chat backup gets stuck at a percentage, never finishes, or WhatsApp says it can't restore your chats on a new phone.
Try these in order
- Restart your phone and plug it in Backups need power and a fresh start; make sure the battery is charged or the phone is plugged in (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Fix your connection Turn Wi-Fi off and on, or try mobile data — but don't hop between Wi-Fi networks mid-backup, as that causes time-outs (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Free up space A backup that's too big for your remaining storage will stall, so delete large media and reduce the backup size (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Sign out and back into your Google Account Then check WhatsApp is pointed at the right account under Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Google Account (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Update Google Play Services Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > App details > Update (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Check WhatsApp's permissions Make sure the Photos and videos permission is set to Allow (WhatsApp Help Center).
- Reinstall WhatsApp Uninstall it, restart the phone, and reinstall — remember the restore prompt only appears during initial setup (WhatsApp Help Center).
Still stuck? If nothing works the backup file is probably corrupted, and WhatsApp can't repair it or recover chats from its servers because your history isn't stored there (WhatsApp Help Center).
