WhatsApp Can't Verify Your Phone Number: How to Fix It

WhatsApp keeps saying it's verifying your number, or the six-digit SMS code never arrives so you can't finish setting up.

Try these in order

  1. Type your number in full international format Include the country code and drop any leading zeros — for example +1 408 XXX-XXXX (WhatsApp Help Center).
  2. Check the number can receive texts You need an active SIM for that number; VoIP numbers, landlines and toll-free numbers won't work (WhatsApp Help Center).
  3. Test your reception Send yourself an SMS from another phone to confirm texts are actually arriving (WhatsApp Help Center).
  4. Let the timer run out, then choose "Call me" WhatsApp will phone you and read out the six-digit code — check voicemail if you miss it (WhatsApp Help Center).
  5. Never guess the code Entering wrong codes locks you out for a set period, and there's no way to speed that up (WhatsApp Help Center).
  6. Restart and switch networks Turn the phone off for 30 seconds, then try a different network, move location, or turn on Wi-Fi calling (WhatsApp Help Center).
  7. Turn off task killers and update WhatsApp Blocker apps can intercept the code, and an old version can fail registration outright (WhatsApp Help Center).
Still stuck? Codes can take up to 24 hours to arrive; if nothing has come after that, contact your mobile provider (WhatsApp Help Center).
