YouTube App Keeps Crashing: How to Fix It

YouTube closes by itself, freezes mid-video, or shows "YouTube keeps stopping" as soon as you open it.

Try these in order

  1. Force stop the app On Android go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > YouTube > Force stop, then reopen it (Carlcare).
  2. Restart your device Hold the power button and choose Restart, then try YouTube again (YouTube Help).
  3. Clear the app's cache Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Avoid Clear data, which removes your downloads (Carlcare).
  4. Update the YouTube app Open your app store and install any pending update (YouTube Help).
  5. Update Android System WebView Search for it in the Play Store, tap Update, and restart your phone — this fixes a lot of crash loops (Carlcare).
  6. Free up storage Go to Settings > Storage and delete unused apps, watched downloads and large files (Carlcare).
  7. Install system updates, then reinstall YouTube Check Settings > System > System updates, and if crashes continue uninstall and reinstall YouTube — note you may lose downloaded videos (Carlcare).
Still stuck? Try YouTube in a browser or on another device to see whether the problem is the app or your phone (YouTube Help), then send feedback from your profile icon > Help and Feedback right after a crash (YouTube Help).
