ChatGPT Login Issues: How to Fix It
You try to sign in to ChatGPT and get bounced back, stuck on "Checking your browser…", or hit an error saying there's already a user with your email.
Try these in order
- Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try again. This is OpenAI's first suggestion for anyone who could log in before but suddenly can't (OpenAI Help Center).
- Use the same sign-in method you originally signed up with. If you created your account with "Continue with Google," "Continue with Microsoft," or "Continue with Apple," you have to keep using that button — mixing methods triggers "There is already a user with email…" or "Wrong authentication method" (OpenAI Help Center).
- Try an incognito window or a different browser or device. Extensions, cached data, outdated browsers and unusual device configurations can all block login, and a clean window rules them out (OpenAI Help Center).
- Break a "Checking your browser…" loop. Turn off any VPN or proxy and refresh, temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy tools and script blockers, and make sure cookies (including third-party cookies) and JavaScript are allowed for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com (OpenAI Help Center).
- Switch networks. Moving from corporate Wi-Fi to mobile data often fixes both verification loops and "We have detected suspicious login behavior" warnings (OpenAI Help Center).
- Check for a hidden Apple relay email. If you signed up with Apple and used "Hide My Email," your account is tied to an @privaterelay.appleid.com address — signing in with your personal email won't find it (OpenAI Help Center).
- If sign-up says "This user already exists," log in instead. That message usually means you started signing up before without finishing, so the account already exists and just needs a login at chatgpt.com/auth/login (OpenAI Help Center).
Still stuck? Check status.openai.com to rule out a live incident before you troubleshoot any further (OpenAI Status). If you're travelling, or seeing a DeviceCheckError or suspicious-activity alert, OpenAI's Login Issues collection has dedicated articles for each of those situations (OpenAI Help Center).
