ChatGPT Billing or Subscription Issues: How to Fix It
You've been charged but ChatGPT still shows you on the Free plan, your renewal payment failed, or you want a refund for a subscription you didn't mean to buy.
Try these in order
- Sign in with the exact account you paid with. If you were charged but still see the Free plan, check you're using the same authentication method you subscribed with — Google, Apple, Microsoft, or email and password (OpenAI Help Center).
- Look for a hidden Apple relay address. If you used Sign in with Apple and chose "Hide My Email," find the private relay address in your Apple ID settings and sign in with that (OpenAI Help Center).
- Restore purchases on mobile. In the iOS or Android app, go to Settings > Restore purchases to resync your subscription, then log out on all devices and log back in with the correct account (OpenAI Help Center).
- Check your subscription and invoices. Log into ChatGPT, click the profile icon, then Settings > Account to manage the plan, view invoices, or cancel — confirming as you go that you're on the same email or single sign-on used to buy it (OpenAI Help Center).
- For a failed renewal, clear your browser cache and cookies and retry the payment. OpenAI lists this as the first step when a renewal transaction fails (OpenAI Help Center).
- Call your bank if it keeps failing. Ask whether there's an issue with the account, whether you have sufficient funds, and whether the bank is blocking the transaction for security reasons — and double-check your card details, billing address and expiry date (OpenAI Help Center).
- Confirm your region is supported. Payments can be declined if either you or your card issuer is outside OpenAI's supported countries and territories (OpenAI Help Center).
Still stuck? For refunds, log into ChatGPT with the charged account, go to the Help Center and use the chat widget at the bottom right — accidental purchases are generally eligible if you get in touch within 14 days of the charge, and approved refunds are processed within 5–7 business days for web purchases or 10 business days for Google Play (OpenAI Help Center). Subscriptions bought through Apple must be cancelled and refunded directly by Apple (OpenAI Help Center).
