ChatGPT File Upload Failing: How to Fix It

Try these in order

1. Check the file size against the limits. Any single file uploaded to ChatGPT or a GPT is capped at 512 MB, spreadsheets at roughly 50 MB depending on row size, and images at 20 MB each (OpenAI Help Center).
2. Check the content limit too. Text and document files are capped at 2 million tokens per file — a limit that doesn't apply to spreadsheets — so a huge document can fail even when it's well under 512 MB (OpenAI Help Center).
3. Make sure you're in the right account and plan. Confirm you're signed into the account and subscription you think you are, since free users get just 3 file uploads per day while paid users get up to 80 files every 3 hours (OpenAI Help Center).
4. Wait out the rolling rate limit. The 80-files-per-3-hours cap rolls, failed attempts can count toward it, and upload limits may be lowered during peak hours — so pausing and retrying later genuinely helps (OpenAI Help Center).
