Venmo Payment Declined: How to Fix It
You try to send money and Venmo tells you the payment can't be completed right now, or that it was declined by your bank or card issuer.
Try these in order
- Read the exact error message If Venmo shows specific wording, follow the guidance in that message — it usually points to whether the problem is Venmo's security check or your bank.
- Contact your bank or card issuer Many declines happen entirely outside Venmo. Your bank can tell you why it blocked the transaction and can often release it.
- Add money to your Venmo balance Top up your balance, then use that balance to make the payment instead of your card or bank.
- Switch to a different payment method Try another linked bank account or card in the payment screen.
- Check your limits Errors in the 400 or 403 range often mean you've hit a payment or transfer limit, so check your account's limits before retrying.
- Wait and try again later If nothing above works, Venmo suggests simply attempting the payment at a later time — automated security flags often clear on their own.
Still stuck? Repeated declines may mean a restriction on your account. Go to Venmo's Contact Us page and use the Connect with Support options to have someone look at your specific account.
