Instagram Keeps Crashing: How to Fix It
Instagram closes itself the moment you open it, freezes while you're scrolling Reels, or force-quits right as you try to post a Story. It's frustrating, but it's almost always fixable in a few minutes.
Try these in order
- Force close the app and reopen it. On iPhone, swipe up to the multitasking screen and swipe Instagram away; on Android, go to Settings > Apps > App Management > Instagram > Force Stop, then relaunch — this clears the app's active memory and fixes a surprising number of crashes (Beebom).
- Restart your phone. A reboot clears out apps sitting in memory and often resolves whatever was making Instagram fall over (Beebom).
- Update Instagram. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Instagram, and install any pending update — crashes that suddenly hit lots of people are often a version mismatch with Instagram's servers (Socialz).
- Clear the app's cache. On Android go to Settings > Apps > App Management > Instagram > Storage usage > Clear cache; on iPhone there's no cache button, so offload the app via Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Instagram > Offload App and reinstall, which keeps your data (Beebom).
- Free up storage space. Instagram needs room to write temporary files — aim to keep at least 150–200 MB free, since low storage can corrupt app files and cause crashes (Beebom).
- Update your phone's operating system. On iPhone go to Settings > General > Software Update; on Android go to Settings > System > System Updates and install what's offered (wikiHow).
- Uninstall and reinstall Instagram. Delete the app, then download it again from the App Store or Play Store — this gives you a clean install with a fresh cache. You'll need to sign in again afterwards (wikiHow).
